Trump's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
