The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.
This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.
His son, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.
