Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
