Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
